| Patsy Brekke Writing Foundations, Inc. "Building a solid foundation of powerful writing skills for life!" |
I teach the fundamentals of solid writing to students in grades 3 through 12 through a course called Writing Foundations. It is a two-year program, and I use Cite It Right in a variety of ways. For first year students, I primarily use it as a teacher’s guide when I introduce bibliographies for summaries and small reports. All second year students must purchase Cite It Right as a text book for the class. They use it as they practice inserting quotations and other elements that require documentation. To familiarize the students with the contents of the resource, I have also created a study guide as a warm up to each class.
My intention is to equip the students so well in documentation skills that when they move on to college, using any style that an instructor assigns will be a simple task. Cite It Right is the perfect resource for that. Prior to Cite It Right, I had used A Manual for Writers by Kate Turabian, the MLA Handbook and even the Chicago Manual of Style with my students. Each guide was definitely overwhelming in its own way, and somedays it felt like we spent more time searching for the right information than we did writing a simple bibliographic entry! Cite It Right, with its inviting layout, sensible organization, and abundant examples unmistakably surpasses them all. It simply unlocks the mystery and reason behind traditional documentation handbooks.
I cannot say enough good about Cite It Right. I recommend it to the parents of all my writing students, and my classes would not be as successful without it.
